17 But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ predicted. 18 They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. 19 These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them.
New Living Translation (Jude 17–19). Tyndale House Publishers.
Whenever we have something precious or valuable, we need to be on guard and place it in safekeeping so that it isn’t lost or stolen. The most precious thing a Christian has, is his or her faith. The apostles in the New Testament are frequently warning about things that have the potential to separate us from our faith.
In this scripture taken from Jude, we are being told to be on guard particularly for scoffers, people that show contempt, derision, or mockery of the Biblical truths. I am witnessing lots of scoffers these days, that is, people that believe their own wisdom is superior to that found in the Bible. Why is that, because they have decided not to be held to any standard that is coming from so-called ancient manuscripts, they are unbelievers. The scripture quoted above says…”scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires” we must always remember and rely on scripture itself…
There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.
The Message: the Bible in contemporary language (2 Ti 3:15–16).
The easiest way for the enemy of your soul to lead you away from faith in Christ is to misquote scripture, Satan tried using this tactic on Jesus in the wilderness. So reader let us not succumb to pop-religion quoted by various scoffers that are making an attempt to steer any listener away from God’s ancient but totally relevant truths. The scoffer’s agenda is to have a lifestyle, that is clearly condemned in scripture, to be acceptable to as many people that they are able to convince. I’m not going to spell out examples of this in today’s society because you are fully capable of your own application.
The more important issue here is, divisions being created between good solid Christian citizens. In our scripture, speaking of the scoffers, it says “These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you“. There is a tactic of the enemy to get us arguing amongst our selves, don’t buy into it. It is one thing to be tolerant of various behaviors outside of the church but it is quite something else to celebrate a lifestyle that is abhorrent to God. I don’t believe for one second that God winks at some unrighteous lifestyle and says that is ok. God is tough on the things that don’t meet His standard, and it is for our own well-being.
Remember we are to be holy as God is holy “For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy. 1 Peter 1:16 We are first fully and totally saved when we come to Christ, then we enter into a process of being made holy.
So let us not be deceived by scoffers, who have an agenda, to divide us. Christians shouldn’t find themselves in an argument with fellow Christians over things that have no place in Christianity.
