In the book of Jeremiah, chapter 49, we have five oracles concerning the nations. It is interesting to me that we find God governs all nations on the face of the earth. Of course we know God governs the nation of Israel, but all nations? The nation of Ammon was an enemy of Israel and occupying land that God had given to Israel. The scripture quoted here is an example of, and similar to, prophetic words spoken about other nations.
But I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites

in days to come.
I, the LORD, have spoken.”
I have been enlightened by G. Campbell Morgan’s commentary on this chapter from Jeremiah. There would be high value in reading Jeremiah 49.
“The presence of these statements in prophecies concerned with the doom of these nations for their sin and corruption, is a revelation of how this prophet of God understood the principles of the Divine government. Jeremiah saw God governing. That fact was, of course, the rock foundation of his faith. He saw, moreover, that all His wrath was moved against sin; His stroke in judgment was upon those who were corrupt by reason of their disobedience to light. But he saw also that the ultimate purpose of the activity of wrath is that of restoration, not in the case of Israel only, but also in that of all the nations. The fact that for some of these nations no such restoration is foretold, reveals the awful possibility of resisting not only the mercy of God, but His judgments also, so completely that there is no possibility of restoration.”

This speaks to me about the times we are living in at this moment in history. I can think through the various nations present on the earth at this time and just wonder where they are going to come down related to God’s mercy and judgment. This is definitely a time for Christians to read, see, or listen to the news with our Bible nearby. Where do you think the United States may be in the process of God’s mercy or judgment?
Without being political, it seems to me that as a country we started out to be a God-fearing nation. That fact is reflected in our constitution and our history. Almost all universities were begun to train ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, how far we have fallen. Most all hospitals and charities were started by Christian organizations. Would you say that we may have lost our way? I won’t go on with examples of degradation in the underlying morals of the United States and many other nations i.e. Canada, UK, France, etc.
What should I do?
Revive the Spirit of God within me, fan the flame.
Become even more involved in my local church.
Be a strong witness to my neighbors, by the way I live.
