Truth Told

Christian Perspectives

These are the memoirs of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah.

Nehemiah’s Concern for Jerusalem
In late autumn, in the month of Kislev, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign, I was at the fortress of Susa. 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven

New Living Translation (Ne 1:1–4). Tyndale House Publishers.

As I reread one more time, the book of Nehemiah, I am struck by the parallels I see as it relates to the current times we are living in. I’ve been thinking how far the United States of America has drifted from its Godly foundation.

Remember, Nehemiah was living in the time of Israel and Judah returning to Jerusalem after 70 years of exile in Babylon. He had received a report back from his family land that the rebuilding of Jerusalem was stalled and not going anywhere, Nehemiah’s heart was broken from this report.

When I think about the America I grew up in and its stability as a nation under God and the rule of law, my heart breaks when I see how far we have fallen away as nonGodly ideas are projected forward and a new man made morality is trying to replace Biblical values.

What is the answer for this country to return to the safe and secure place of coming back to God and operating according to His principles, what will it take?

As Nehemiah did when learning of the desperate conditions in Jerusalem, he went to prayer.

Dear friends and fellow sojourners in Christ, we desperately need to become very serious about a return of this nation to come back to Godly principles by falling on our faces in prayer. We need to take back our families and train up our children in the ways of our Lord.

This will be only a beginning but we have to begin somewhere. My heart breaks, and I believe God’s heart breaks, as too how far we have fallen away. We need to live examples of holy lives. Our churches need to be led by unashamed Godly pastors, elders, deacons and parishioners who are able to demonstrate Godly living to our children and neighbors. We need to go back and fix root causes and stop screaming at the symptoms.

Larry, I could not agree with you more as it saddens me too that as a country we have strayed so far away from the many principles that the Lord has taught us. We as Christian’s have a mountain to move not only in our own Churches but at the Federal and State level of government. The mountain can be moved by carrying away a stone at a time, it will take time, however if all the Preachers instill their congregations to carry away a stone each we can return to a godly society. Just my 5 eggs and a ham sandwich Best as always David

Hi Larry, Thanks so much for the above. We couldn’t agree more as we see the decline of our nation on every level: politically, morally, spiritually and legally. In all of these areas the people with evil intentions are picking up speed on a daily basis, witness the latest shootings & the demonstrations at the Supreme Court justices homes, etc.
On a personal note, we are praying for your speedy recovery. It’s been nine years since my triple bypass plus a new upper aeorta but I feel good as new! Blessings to you & Gail.
