I was stunned and taken aback this morning in my daily reading when I came across this verse…
As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink,
New Living Translation (Ec 10:1). Tyndale House Publishers.
so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.
What a metaphor, it stopped me dead in my tracks. It says to me, be careful to draw on the Lord’s wisdom every day and at all times, which is resident in each one of us, “we have the mind of Christ” 1 Co 2:16. We have no excuse for going against Godly wisdom, it is just a fact that the old sinful nature will cause me to do foolish things if I allow it to. I like the way Oswald Chambers puts it because he has such an ability to be concise and to the point. In today’s “Utmost For His Highest” Chambers says “Disobedience in mind to the heavenly vision will make you a slave to points of view that are alien to Jesus Christ. Do not look at someone else and say—‘Well, if he can have those views and prosper, why cannot I?“. This to me is foolishness, having read in the Bible a truth and then go out into life and not apply it because others influence me to act different then what I know God wants. Imagine, if anyone is watching my walk with the Lord, and certainly God is, and they see me doing things incongruous with the Gospel, then that stinks.
It isn’t only how it may affect others and their own walk when I act foolish, but it is also that I reap what I sow. In Deuteronomy, Moses tells us that God blesses and He curses, God does not wink at disobedience it is serious stuff and there are consequences.
How do I guard against foolishness which leads to curses? To know what God would have of me by meeting with Him in prayer and daily Bible reading. We read in Micah 6:8…
…O people, the LORD has told you what is good,

and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.
